Baptistonia echinata

This small-sized, cool to hot-growing epiphytic orchid is native to the montane rainforests of Brazil, specifically in Minas Gerais, Espirito Santo, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Paraná, and Santa Catarina. It grows at elevations of 50 to 1200 meters and features narrowly ellipsoidal or subcylindrical, compressed pseudobulbs that are partially covered by imbricating sheaths. The plant carries one to two apical, oblong-lanceolate or narrowly elliptic leaves. Blooming in the winter, it produces a long, 45 cm pendulous inflorescence that is mottled with dull crimson. The flowers emerge in a densely flowered raceme or a paniculate arrangement with two to six flowers per branch, accompanied by papery, elliptic floral bracts.
