This medium to large terrestrial orchid is found in Laos, Thailand, Borneo, Java, Malaysia, the Philippines, and Sumatra at elevations of 120 to 1700 meters. It thrives in humid forests on decaying trunks and deep leaf mold. With small, close-set pseudobulbs and 5 to 6 plicate, acuminate leaves, it blooms in spring. Its erect, 50 to 60 cm long inflorescence bears 40 to 110 flowers, with large floral bracts that fall before the odorless flowers open.
