This orchid is found in Colombia, Venezuela, the Guianas, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, and Ecuador at elevations of 200 to 700 meters. It grows as a small to medium-sized, hot to warm-growing epiphyte on trees near rivers in tropical forests. It has elongated, slightly compressed pseudobulbs covered with sheaths that wither over time. Blooming in spring and early summer, it produces a stout, reddish, 8 cm long inflorescence with 3 to 7 fragrant, long-lasting, flat-opening flowers on a newly formed pseudobulb.
