This small-sized epiphyte or lithophyte is found in Java, Sumatra, Borneo, and Malaysia at elevations from sea level to 1,200 meters, thriving in moist, shady forests on trees and rocks. It has slightly flattened, cylindrical pseudobulbs spaced 4 to 6 inches apart, each bearing a single elliptical, bluntly pointed leaf. Blooming in summer, it produces an erect, stout inflorescence 10 to 44 cm long, enveloped by acuminate sheaths, carrying up to 15 foul-smelling flowers that do not open fully.
