This small epiphyte or lithophyte is found in Java, Sumatra, Borneo, and Malaysia, growing in moist, shady lowland and lower montane forests at elevations up to 1200 meters. It has cylindrical, slightly flattened pseudobulbs spaced 4 to 6 inches apart, each bearing a single elliptical, blunt-tipped leaf. Blooming in summer, it produces a stout, 10 to 44 cm inflorescence with up to 15 foul-smelling flowers that do not open well, emerging from a base covered in acuminate sheaths.
