Bulbophyllum patens

This medium-sized orchid is found in India, Thailand, Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo, growing in swampy and lowland forests at elevations up to 200 meters. It is a hot-growing epiphyte with a hairy rhizome and spaced ellipsoid pseudobulbs, each carrying a single, thick, elliptic-oblong leaf. Blooming in late winter to early spring, it produces a 5 cm long, arching inflorescence with overlapping yellow bracts marked with red spots, bearing a solitary, slightly fragrant, non-resupinate flower held below the leaf.
