Cattleya dowiana

This medium-sized epiphytic orchid grows in Costa Rica and Panama on tree crowns along the Caribbean coast at elevations of 250 to 1200 meters. It has clavate pseudobulbs with distinct ribs when dry, partially covered by basal sheaths that shred with age. The plant carries a single, fleshy, oblong-elliptic leaf. Blooming in late summer and fall, it produces a 5-inch terminal inflorescence with 5 to 6 short-lived but very showy, fragrant flowers that emit scents of lemon, soap, spice, and vanilla.
