Dendrobium smillieae

This large epiphyte grows in Queensland, Australia, and Papua New Guinea at elevations under 600 meters, thriving on trees and rocks in open forests near rainforest edges. It has slender, fusiform stems covered in thin sheaths, with oblong or lanceolate, twisted or curved leaves. Blooming in winter and spring, it produces a densely flowered raceme, 4 to 12.5 cm long, emerging from near the apex of a leafless cane. The thick, waxy, fleshy flowers are tubular and clustered in a ball.
