This large-sized, warm to cool-growing epiphyte is found in Sumatra and Java at elevations of 600 to 1,250 meters in moist, dark primary forests. It has clustered stems that droop with age and carry many lanceolate, papery, dark green leaves with reddish undersides, which are deciduous. Blooming in late spring, it produces a 3 cm long, pendulous inflorescence with 7 to 14 shiny, wide-open flowers emerging from nodes on the upper half of the leafless stems.
